Professional Learning and Development for Teachers
We know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns — the ones we don't know we don't know.
I am an experienced New Zealand teacher and facilitator who has worked in education for twenty years. Many years ago, I took a postgraduate course that focused on language analysis in the classroom; it was only then that I realised the major gaps that I had in my own knowledge of sentence structures, grammar and punctuation. Up until this point, I thought I had the knowledge to teach writing well. I thought saying "Remember your capital letters and full stops" was enough. I was wrong. I began teaching sentence structures explicitly in the classroom and the difference was amazing! Students could understand what I was talking about when I modelled writing. Editing work with students became so much easier because of the shared language.
Now, I facilitate workshops that focus on improving teachers' understanding of sentence structure, grammar, punctuation and spelling. Determined to keep my knowledge and understanding of current writing trends up-to-date, I also work part-time as a writing support teacher at a large, intermediate school in Auckland.

After the PD with Belinda, I have been buzzing about teaching writing! Who knew writing sentences could be so much fun?! The practical tasks Belinda asked us to do while she explained how sentences are constructed, really helped me fully understand sentence structure and proper use of punctuation. Incredibly valuable PD. Thank you, Belinda!
